Primary 17/11: Fostering Friendships with Respect, Responsibility and Resilience

Dear Parents and Carers,

We are entering into our final fortnight of Second Steps. Our school-wide theme is friendship skills. In our morning assemblies, we’ll be reminding students to:

  • Invite others to play – understand the importance of inclusivity, foster camaraderie, and enjoy sharing their and other experiences.
  • Play in fairways – involves treating others with respect, following the rules, and being honest in their actions.
  • Take responsibility for mistakes by making amends – we acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes and encourage students to recognise this, and address and rectify their error.
  • Learn how to handle name calling assertively – encouraging your child to calmly express their feelings, communicate this to the other student, and foster resilience.

Each of these skills helps your child to make and keep friends. Remember to model these skills, too. Please share with your child what you’re thinking, as this assists them and makes it easier for them to learn and practice making (and keeping) friends every day.

I am looking forward to continuing with  ‘Second Step’ as an important part of learning in 2024.

Kind regards,

Mrs Gillian Coote

Primary Deputy Principal
