High School 9/8: Welcome Message & Term 3 Highlights

Welcome Message & Term 3 Highlights

Welcome back to Term 3! I trust that the holiday break was a rejuvenating time for everyone and that you are all ready for another productive term. We have a busy schedule ahead with numerous events, examinations, and parent-teacher evenings planned. I would like to highlight this term’s Parent Seminar, which will take place online via Zoom on Monday, August 19th at 7pm. The topic is “Increasing Resilience in Your Child”, offering invaluable strategies to help prepare your child for future challenges. This online format is designed to accommodate our busy families, ensuring you can easily access these insights. Click here to register for the online seminar.

Student Leadership Initiatives

At the start of the term, Mr McMullen addressed our students regarding the leadership program. Students in Years 6-9 have the opportunity to apply for positions as Year Leaders, while those in Years 10-11 can apply to join the Student Leadership Council. These roles allow students to engage in meaningful service to the school community and foster the Carey Attribute, “serve and lead for the benefit of others.”

Student leaders have the opportunity to drive a variety of initiatives. For example, our current student leaders have:

  • Organised fundraising events for service-learning activities
  • Collaborated across year groups to cultivate a positive school culture
  • Supported various school events
  • Participated in special events and functions where student leaders are required

Recently, two of our student leaders were invited to an afternoon tea at the electoral office of Nathan Hagarty, the Member for Leppington. This event was part of the recognition for Education Week 2024, providing a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with peers and Mr. Hagarty.

The Selection Criteria

At William Carey, our leadership philosophy is rooted in a Biblical perspective, aiming to model the Kingdom of God. This means leaders must embody principles of grace and a servant attitude, reflecting Christ as the Servant King. We seek enthusiastic, responsible students who can serve the school community and be exemplary role models for their peers. Year Leaders are expected to maintain high standards in academics and behaviour, embodying the WCCS student attributes.

Years 7 to 10 Leadership Initiative

Each team of Year Leaders will include four students (typically two male and two female) from each grade in Years 7-10. These students will serve from Term 4 of the current year through Term 3 of the following year, after which they will step down to allow new leaders to participate.

How to Apply

Students interested in being considered for Year Leader positions must submit an application form – click to download Word doc. We encourage students to reflect on their own leadership potential or to encourage peers whom they believe demonstrate leadership qualities to apply. All eligible candidates will then proceed to a peer voting process. Please note that final applications are due 8am Monday 12th August.

Years 11 and 12 SLC elections

Year 11 and 12 SLC elections will be conducted during this term. All leadership positions will be announced towards the end of Term 3.

I look forward to working with our new Year Leaders as they participate in authentic opportunities that will provide opportunities to serve the school community.

Yours sincerely,

Anthony Hudson

Bell Shakespeare Workshop

Learning Support Students recently took part in a workshop hosted by Bell Shakespeare. It was a wonderful experience for practical learning. Here are a few photos from their reenactment of ‘Romeo and Juliet’.
