Primary 18/8/23: Being safe, respectful and responsible

As shared in week 2’s newsletter, the “Second Step” program is a well known social-emotional learning (SEL) curriculum designed for students Prep to Year 8. The core principles of the “Second Step” program often revolve around three main themes: being safe, being respectful, and being responsible. These themes are essential in helping students develop healthy relationships, manage their emotions, and make informed choices. Here’s a breakdown of each theme:

Being Safe:

  • This theme teaches students about personal safety, both physically and emotionally.
  • It emphasises understanding boundaries, identifying potentially harmful situations, and developing strategies to stay safe.
  • Students learn to recognise and manage feelings like anger, frustration and fear in a safe and constructive environment.

Being Respectful:

  • This theme focuses on cultivating respect for oneself and others.
  • It teaches students the importance of treating others with kindness, empathy, and consideration.
  • Students learn practical communication skills, conflict resolution techniques, and how to actively listen to others.

Being Responsible:

  • This theme emphasises accountability and making thoughtful decisions.
  • Students learn about the consequences of their actions and how their choices can impact themselves and those around them.
  • They develop skills related to problem-solving, goal setting, and making ethical decisions.

By focusing on these three themes, the program aims to create a positive and inclusive school environment where students are better equipped to navigate social interactions, manage their emotions, and make responsible choices.

Times Tables Rock Star Founder Inspires Students!

Last week, our school had a fantastic visit from Bruno Reddy, the founder and CEO of Times Table Rockstars! His insights and tips for learning our timetables were incredibly inspiring. Our students were ecstatic to meet him, sharing creative character and in-game item ideas like tie-dye guitars and penguin outfits. They are more motivated than ever to rock those times tables. A big thanks to Bruno for an unforgettable experience!
