Primary 20/9: Exploring, Learning, and Growing in the Library

Exploring, Learning, and Growing in the Library

We have had another busy, fun-filled term in the library!

Many of our younger WCCS community members have enjoyed attending Hairy McCarey Storytime on a Monday morning. The children have listened to stories, joined in rhymes and sung songs together, building their early literacy skills.

Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students have engaged in research this term, investigating Information Skills through the “Plan, Do, Review” process. Kindergarten explored the differences between Fiction and Non-fiction books within the topic of ‘egg-laying animals’ in God’s creation. Year 1 students researched how to write a picture book, using a dinosaur they created last term as their inspiration.

Students in Year 2 have explored quality literature this term, after engaging in a research task last term. They examined two Australian authors and their illustrators, Margaret Wild and Jackie French. The students listened to, read, discussed, formulated opinions, evaluated and enjoyed books written by these authors.

Across Years 3-6, students followed “The Big 6” steps for research, to investigate a particular topic. Our Year 3 students examined fairness in games and sports, through researching well known games, changing the rules and then playing the games with their new rules. Students were encouraged to consider how rules can be fair or unfair and how changing rules in games makes others feel.

Students in Year 4 researched the impact of technology on our lives, considering ways that it can both help and harm. They specifically investigated drones and robots, and used their research to create a news broadcast.

Our Stage 3 students conducted research relating to geographical inquiry. Year 5 studied natural environments that are in danger due to people’s influence. Students learnt that the world is under the influence of sin and that people, whom God put as stewards on the earth, are not looking after the environment as they should. Students in Year 6 selected a country of interest, and researched its major features and the events/cultural aspects that have shaped this country.

We’re looking forward to a wonderful Term 4, where we will be celebrating Book Week!
