Dear Parents and Carers,
At William Carey, we have the expertise of staff in music, Mrs Lombard, and art, Mrs O’Keefe. These teachers work alongside the students each week or fortnight. Primary students benefit from learning skills in the area of creative arts, either music or art. The various skills they learn have a significant impact on their ongoing growth.

Music in Primary School
Here at William Carey, we value the importance of music education for our students, and we also know that this often-overlooked skill can help us draw near to our Heavenly Father in a very unique way through praise and worship. There are therefore many opportunities at William Carey for students to be involved in a wide range of music activities.
Classroom music lessons are structured around various listening, singing, percussion, movement and composition activities and are delivered from a biblical perspective. Students from Kindergarten to year 2 build their skills through various singing and percussion activities. In Year 4 students get the opportunity to focus on learning a band instrument through participation in the band program that was launched this year. The year 5 and 6 students focus on building basic ukulele skills to help shape their understanding of more modern music genres. This year we have also introduced specialist music lessons to our youngest students in Prep.
William Carey also offers an extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities, i.e. K-2 Choir, 3-6 Choir, Vocal Ensemble, the Guitar Ensemble and the String Ensemble. We also have tutors visiting our school to deliver one on one music tuition to interested students. The hard work of our students was celebrated at our annual music concert, A Little Night Music, on 1st June 2024.

Art in the Primary School
What a wonderful wealth of Artistic talent we have in K-6 at William Carey.
God is the master creator, and our sensational students are made in his creative image.
Students from Year 1 to Year 6 come to the Art room P3 over the Year to be involved in Art activities as part of their class program.
In Terms three and four, to cater for their differing ages and abilities and to give all budding artists an opportunity, I have extended the ‘Art for Everyone’ lunch times.
They are now… ‘Art for Everyone in K-2 on Monday at lunchtime. Art for Everyone 3-6 on Thursday at lunchtime.
In class the students have enjoyed creating a variety of pleasing Artworks, some examples of these are captured in the accompanying photos. Some Grades started their Art journey with a class collaborative project. Year 6 created a wonderful class jigsaw; Year 1 has made colourful hands for a class tree.
From Year 1’s current project…’An Abstract Line and Pattern Painting’. This step-by-step project uses wax crayons and watercolour paints to fantastic effect!
Henri Matisse has inspired year 2 when making and naming their colourful collages. Pablo Picasso’s cubism paintings also inspired Year 2’s quirky watercolour paintings on watercolour paper.
Year 3 have used ‘mad clay’ to model their spiky echidnas. A ‘parade’ of echidna’s is currently air drying in the Art room.
Year 5 were inspired by God’s light show, in May, “The Aurora Australis” to use colour diffusing paper and watercolour markers to create their own wonderful versions, complete with a silhouette figure to give perspective and focus to their work.
Year 6 focussed on features of portraits and creating their own self-portraits on canvas.
A display of these will shortly be on show in our library.
